Understanding Different Wallpaper Substrates: Non-Woven vs Traditional Paper

When people talk about "paper types" in wallpaper, they're usually referring to the substrate — the material backing that the design is printed onto.
The substrate affects how wallpaper installs, feels, performs over time, and how easy it is to remove later.
Here are the two main types you’ll encounter:

  1. Non-Woven Wallpaper

What it is:
A modern blend of natural and synthetic fibres, designed to be durable, breathable, and easy to work with.
Pros:

  • Paste the wall (no need to paste the paper)
  • Tear-resistant and repositionable during installation
  • Does not expand or shrink when wet
  • No soaking time needed before hanging
  • Removes easily in full strips
  • Breathable — reduces mould risk

Cons:

  • Slightly higher cost than paper wallpapers
  • Slightly less natural "paper feel"

Best for:
DIY projects, busy homes, anyone wanting an easier install and future removal.

  1. Traditional Paper Wallpaper

What it is:
Wallpaper printed onto pure paper, without synthetic fibres.
Pros:

  • Natural, authentic texture and appearance
  • Crisp, fine print details
  • Strong bond to wall when installed correctly
  • Suitable for historic restorations or traditional interiors

Cons:

  • Paste the paper (requires soaking time — "booking")
  • Expands when wet, then shrinks as it dries (requires skill to manage)
  • Delicate when wet — can tear/stretch if mishandled
  • Harder to remove
  • Not ideal for humid environments without protective coatings
  • Harder to install, takes longer

Best for:
Feature walls, formal rooms, professional installations, historic homes.

Choosing the Right Substrate

  • If you’re new to wallpapering, Non-Woven is easier.
  • If you’re restoring a character home or want a truly traditional feel, choose Traditional Paper.
  • If your room is humid or gets a lot of traffic, Non-Woven is more forgiving.
